If…. Beckenham are able to field the same side week in week out, then you’d be foolish not to back them to win the Kent League title at a canter. I say if, because this very, very talented side is almost totally made up of ‘academy players’ groomed for Beckenham’s sister club Fisher who are able to call on players who have been trained since an early age at clubs such as Crystal Palace, West Ham, Millwall and Charlton to name just a few.
Beckenham with new ground facilities starting to change to the look of Eden Park now have the funding to field the most talented side seen in the Kent League for many, many a year.  It must be noted that Matt Toms Whitstable side never gave up, all the players gave their all on a day when everything clicked for Beckenham, Whitstable were up against a side who were at very top of their game.  The home side, through the excellent Paul Vines took the lead in the 5th minute, prior to his well-taken goal Whitstable had been pegged back into their own half since the first whistle as Beckenham played with total control, their passing and running off the ball was much to admire. Fifteen minutes later, in almost their first foray into the home sides territory Whitstable were level through a Marc Seager penalty, well struck past ‘Becks’ young keeper Rob Tolfrey to level the score after Gary Sayer had been pushed over on a run into the opposition area.

Whitstable then had their best spell of the whole game, Andy Constable, who never stopped running for his side went close twice, Aaron Knight had a great chance put hurried his shot and Town played a little like a team for ten minutes or so. Unfortunately it did not last, the home side picked up the pace and from their second goal, another from Vines after any one of four Beckenham players could have scored, from that moment until the final whistle the outcome was never in doubt.

Just three minutes after the restart, the home side were 3-1 ahead, again Vines the scorer. Now Beckenham really turned on the style with their own brand of running off the ball and one touch football, which they had played from the off, giving Whitstable’s defence, without Andy Kier, nightmares. Tony Sinclair added the 4th for Beckenham just before Whitstable made changes; Ryan Davis came on for Paul Collnutt, Steve Marshall replaced Paul Smith, then Sam Prett replaced Aaron Knight.
Beckenham’s Ryan Martin added the fifth for the home side, Whitstable’s defence tore asunder by quick incisive passing and a shoot on site policy that seemed to stem for the strikers to the defence, all wanted to get on the score sheet.

Ten minutes after coming on Marshall and Prett combined to score Whitstable’s second, the score now 5-2 to the home side. Whitstable’s keeper Mark Brown by far the busiest player on the pitch was making saves every couple of minutes, but was unable to stop Ryan Martin added goal number five for the home side. It was notable that Beckenham’s keeper only kicked the ball long three times in the whole game, in sharp contrast Whitstable’s keeper Brown booted it long the minute the ball was in his hand, perhaps working on the policy that if it went into the home sides half they would leave his goal alone! Vines added his forth; Beckenham’s sixth; before the final whistle, as they walked off the home side were deservedly applauded off the pitch.

becks_away_knight (103k image)Least you think I was gilding the lily with my statement: ‘best side I have seen in the Kent League” I was not alone.
WTFC manager Matt Toms: “They are the best side we have faced since I have been a manager” Steve Marshall: “I would say that was the best side I have ever played against, and believe me in my time I have played against some great sides today they were awesome.”  Rob Thomas: “I have played since I was at school, through the Whitstable youth and now into the first team, they are the best side I have ever played against, they were fantastic today.”

Simon Halsey: “You see one touch football in training like they played today, but to see that in open play was fantastic, as much as we hate losing, when you are beaten by a better side you have to hold your hands up. In my years at Kent League Premier level, I have never seen a side play better than that, (even quality sides from much the higher levels,) they were very special today and teams who do not know these players, that means every side in the Kent Leaguer are in for a big shock. If they can keep the same side together, maybe they can win the league, just maybe we were the unlucky side to play them when Fisher did not have a game!”
