ImageWHITSTABLE HOLIDAY HOMES
This bank holiday weekend features two home fixtures for Whitstable Town. Visiting the Belmont Ground this Saturday are Sevenoaks Town and on Easter Monday Greenwich Borough will provide the opposition. The Reds have just played a couple of the best games I've seen this season, the games at Hythe and Thamesmead were all one way traffic. If league position has any relevance then our lower placed opposition this week should produce another six points, however, to quote Jimmy Greaves, "It's a funny old game". Although at the bottom of the table the Oaks drew at Deal in their last fixture two weeks ago, even though that was only their second points score away from home it could be a sign that they are already rebuilding for next season and ought not be taken for mugs. Since Christmas Borough have climbed to thirteenth from the basement position and are showing good form, lately they have limited Maidstone to just two goals and beat Hythe Town last weekend 2-1. So Marc Seager has to find that fine balance between respect for the other side and relaxed football that can be so difficult in this type of match. If the Oystermen's attitude is right on both occasions they should be happy Easter bunnies by five o'clock Monday.

League leaders, Beckenham Town, also have two games this weekend. A tricky home game versus Slade Green and what should be a more straightforward one at Hythe Town. Becks need two wins to keep the title out of the reach of Maidstone. Green have never really fully recovered from the game against Whitstable, when beaten at their best, and have since been unable to string any results together. They lost last week against Deal in front of a home crowd of only 38. Hythe Town lost the only tooth that did any biting when Sinden transferred his allegiance to the Homelands and will provide more fuel to Beckenham's fire.

The challengers, Maidstone United, play tomorrow (12th) and Easter Monday. At home against Deal Town they should top the table again until five on Saturday with a probable win, they beat Deal 5-1 in the away fixture. Monday's game is an altogether different kettle of fish and could open the door to Becks getting a clear points victory for the title as Vickers Cray and Dartford Athletic visit Bourne Park. In what will be a most thrilling battle VCD look to authenticate their footballing credentials against one of this season's great sides. In the Stones favour Vickers play against Herne Bay on Thursday and Deal Town on the Saturday and will be the more tired side. From completely different ends of the footballing budget the result will hang on the players fitness and their motivation. Martin Ford pitting his wits against Lloyd Hume; surely one of the most fascinating confrontations of this year.

Of special relevance for WTFC, Erith & Belvedere play one of their last two cards on Saturday with a home game against Herne Bay. The Deres need two points from six to put third out of the reach of the Oystermen. As much as it hurts we will be secretly wishing Bay good luck, I think they will need it as they meet an in form side who can sense Ryman football might be on the cards for next year. Herne Bay have only one point to show from the last three games which have all been against table topping opposition. Bay travel to VCD on Thursday, hopefully a confidence booster.

Thamesmead Town also hope to block Whitstable's progress with an away game at Lordswood on Saturday. Mead only have one game this week with just one more home tie left, against Hythe, on their calendar. On last week's showing Lordswood will have a good chance of beating them. Lordswood also play at Tunbridge Wells tomorrow night (12th).

Other KOFL Premier fixtures this week are Erith Town v Greenwich Borough on Good Friday (1.00pm), Hythe Town v Sporting Bengal on Saturday and Deal Town against Tunbridge Wells on Easter Monday.

Two games for the Whitstable Town reserves this week, tonight (Tues 11th) they play at the Belmont Road Ground against Ashford Town in the Floodlight Trophy and on Good Friday away at Dartford in KOFL Division 1. In the FL Trophy Ashford are currently in third, one point behind Whitstable, with two games in hand. Should be a good ressies match come down and have a butchers, the bar will be open.

Come on you Reds!                                                 Peter Albin, 11th April
