Who's likely to drop to Step 5? - 2006/04/06 12:37
Providing
there are no post season reprieves this year the rule for relegation
down from Step Four is 'Bottom club relegated from each Division (4)
plus the three 2nd bottom clubs with the worst points per game record -
total of 7 clubs' At the bottom of Isthmian Division 1 newly
promoted Lymington & New Milton need one more point from the last
five games to be safe from the drop, the same for Molesey. Burgess Hill
Town need four more but have six left to play. The teams requiring
parachutes will likely come from the bottom four who all still have
five matches remaining, Banstead Athletic 34pts, Ashford Town 30pts,
Newport IOW 26pts and Corinthian Casuals 22 pts. Obviously if Ashford
end up in the pool they would be prime candidates for the Kent League.
Thame United are already relegated from Southern
Division One West with only a possible total of 30 points available
they can't catch Dunstable Town currently on 33. Relegated to this
division last season Dunstable currently have a points-per-game average
less than one, as do the next two teams Stourport Swifts and Bracknell
Town both on 34 points. Fifth from bottom Taunton Town are eight points
ahead of them already on 42 points from 37 games.
Although
Bishop Auckland find themselves sixteen points adrift of the field in
their first season down in the Northern Premier Division One they have
plenty of games in hand, potential to climb out of trouble maybe but
they only average 0.438 ppg to date, maybe the writing's on the wall.
Kidsgrove Athletic need one more point to be safe and Belper Town and
Ossett Albion need two more, all three will finish with an average
better than one point per match, good enough. Shepshed Dynamo, newly
promoted Goole and Warrington Town currently have better than one
averages but are definitely not out of the danger zone on 41, 38 and 33
points although Warrington still have ten games left to play! That
leaves Spalding United (30pts) with Bishop Auckland (14pts) firmly in
the mire at the moment.
The worst points per game averages over
all the Step 4 leagues are Thame United 0.333, Bishop Auckland 0.438,
Corinthian Casuals 0.564, Newport IOW 0.666, Ashford Town 0.769,
Spalding United 0.857, Berkhampstead Town 0.865 and Banstead Athletic
0.872.
However, excluding the bottom clubs already listed
above, in Southern Division One east and West the averages are higher
than the other two leagues and one relegatee will come from a second to
last spot in one of these two. Currently with the worst record are
Dunstable Town 0.917, Stourport Swifts 0.919 and Bracknell Town 0.944,
all Western division teams followed by Ilford 0.946 and Aveley and
Potters Bar Town on 0.973 ppg all from the Eastern division.
Plenty of football still left to play this season, absolutely intriguing.
