TALES FROM THE WEST COUNTRY.

Welling United 1 Weymouth 0.  St. Albans 4 Maidenhead 0

Weymouth slipped to second place on goal difference with this defeat. With conditions much better than Whitstable had the previous week Weymouth got off to a solid start with plenty of free flowing passes. Enforced changes were made through injuries but that didn?t seem to matter. Without a win in the last two games Weymouth attacked Welling early on but there was no end product to all the good passing. Welling?s keeper was finally called into play and Turner was more than up to the job on more than one occasion as Weymouth started to penetrate the defence. However after one good attack and shot from Kedwell of Welling the breakthrough came from Welling captain Moore. On 15 minutes Matthews failed to clear with a poor punch and Moore scored from 6 yards. The rest of the half saw Weymouth having shot after shot from all ranges well saved by Turner.

Without a win in the last two games Weymouth attacked Welling early on but there was no end product to all the good passing. The second half started with heavy rain. With conditions becoming difficult the game became scrappy but also more openings were created. The expected substitutions came but still after all the pressure there was no way through a packed Welling defence. With everyone pushed forward Welling nearly went 2-0 up on their only attack in the second half but for a last ditch tackle. With four strikers now on and the keeper up for the corners Weymouth just couldn?t get the ball between the posts and when Smith blasted over form the edge of the box the last chance had gone. Weymouth now host Hayes on Saturday 1st April with St Albans on Easter Monday now looking more and more like a cup final.

Dorchester suffered to the weather and had a postponement while Eastbourne drew 2-2 with high flying Havant. Lee Hook must have been bitterly disappointed as with 90 minutes up Eastbourne continued to push forward leaving him exposed to a last second equaliser from Pacquette.
