TALES FROM THE WEST COUNTRY.

Weymouth 1 Basingstoke 1.  Eastleigh 0 St. Albans 2

Weymouth 1 Cambridge City 1

Weymouth played their game in hand and were unable to take 3 points against a battling Basingstoke team who defended in depth. Nade scored again after ten minutes and controlled the match throughout but sent too many long passes through which were easily picked off by the Basingstoke defence. It was Basingstoke?s first attack when Pedrotti was brought down by Matthews in goal to concede a penalty. That was put away and at half time it was 1-1. The second half saw Weymouth struggle to find a way through the packed defence with Basingstoke happy to settle for a draw. All three subs were made but still there was no joy as shots were blocked, saved or cleared off the line. Having said all this Basingstoke could have stole the 3 points with Weymouth being caught on the break in the last minute and only a superb save from Matthews saving the day.

Weymouth started the day 5 points ahead of St Albans but whereas St Albans had a virtual banker 3 points in the bag, Weymouth were going to have a fight on their hands to get all three.

Weymouth started the day 5 points ahead of St Albans but whereas St Albans had a virtual banker 3 points in the bag, Weymouth were going to have a fight on their hands to get all three. The match had plenty of drama, after 2 minutes Challis was hacked down on the halfway line and had to be carried off. Both teams played it tight initially and chances were few and far between. Then Cambridge had to use a substitute as Lincoln was carried off. On 38 minutes Matthews threw the ball to Clark who ran the length of the field to win a corner. From the corner Nade scored from a header from 12 yards.

The second half was slightly more open with chances at both ends. However the tactics changed after 55 minutes when Weymouth were reduced to 10 men. Clark kicked Pope a little too high for the refs liking and he received a straight red. Nade was immediately taken off and the defence strengthened. As Cambridge attacked the tackles got more aggressive and the yellow card was out a fair bit for both sides. Then more drama when an assistant was injured. There was a delay while an official was found amongst the crowd. The Weymouth defence appeared to be holding out but after 93 minutes Cambridge managed a shot on target and Booth?s shot in a crowded penalty area got Cambridge a point they far from deserved.

Weymouth are next away to Welling United on Saturday.

Mark Robinson was again left high and dry on the bench in Dorchester?s 3-2 beating of Maidenhead after leading 3-0. They are really pushing for a play off place now.
