TALES FROM THE WEST COUNTRY.

Weymouth 4 Newport County 0. St. Albans 2 Dorchester Town 0

The Terras maintained their 5-point lead at the top of the table from St. Albans. I was watching Whitstable last Saturday so this is a report I?ve stolen from someone else.  This was top against bottom and from start to finish it showed. It was also a chance to lessen the advantage St Albans hold with a superior goal difference. In front of one of the highest attendances this season, 2,110, and on a very sunny day Weymouth attacked from the off. The Terras had all the possession and chances were arriving with ease with only the superb Pennock in goal keeping the Weymouth strikers at bay.

After 12 minutes Nade scored from 12 yards after Newport failed to clear from a corner. After the only Newport chance had sailed over the bar Weymouth attacked down the wing with Clarke sending in a cross that Nade hit on the half volley into the back of the net.

The second half was no different although Newport missed a header from the edge of the 6-yard box with the goal gapping. This was their last chance of the match to score as Weymouth and Nade scored again from another badly cleared corner. From now on Weymouth seemed to be happy just to pass the ball around without really threatening the Newport defence.

However with the double substitution of both strikers the new pairing of Eribenne and Holdsworth seemed to kick start the chances again. Their pace was too much for the leg weary Newport defence and Eribenne scored when he was left all alone in the area with 12 minutes to go. Pennock still had time to pull off further saves to keep the scoreline down up until the final whistle.

Weymouth visit Gander Green Lane next Saturday to play Sutton United.

Dorchester Town were unable to overcome St Albans with two second half goals securing a solid win. Mark Robinson was on the bench and didn?t play any part in the match unfortunately.

Lee Hook?s Eastbourne lost 1-0 to Weston Super Mare and are still far from safe, although the other teams didn?t capitalize on this. A big 6 pointer tomorrow with Eastbourne visiting Carshalton.
