ImageFoley bust the Oyster Bubble?WTFC 0 VCD 1 Kent Cup: The Belmont Ground 4th March 2006  After the euphoria of a good league performance last Saturday against erstwhile League Champions Maidstone, it was a below par performance by Marc Seager Whitstable Town as they went out in the semi final of the Kent Cup to VCD. The ?Vickers? came to the Belmont full of confidence after a great run this season in the F.A. Vase when they reached the last sixteen; a feat Town achieved some years ago; going out away to North Ferriby by the single goal. Today, it was Paul Fowley?s perfectly judged header early in the second half, which saw Town, falter within touching distance of silverware loosing by the single goal.

In a first half when both sides took time to settler the early chances went to the visitors, they had a couple of half chances before Whitstable keeper Sam Mott needed to be brave to deny Ashley Proberts. For the home side Arron Knight finished off a good run with a firm shot straight at Grant Wallis, a touch either side and he could have beaten the keeper. Knight was again involved; setting Gary Ward through but Ward delayed his shot and VCD skipper Paul Foley snuffed out the chance. At the other end Mott needed to be on top form between the posts to keep out chances from James Brown and Danny Penny, young Mott held firm and was the main reason Town went in level at the break, it could have been so different had Andy Constable?s low shot across the visitors box been turned in by Steve Marshall who was just centimetres away from making contact at the far post.

Whitstable restarted without Gary Ward who was feeling unwell in the interval, player/manager Marc Seager taking over in midfield alongside Marcos Perona. Seager had opted for an unchanged side from the one which beast Maidstone, Ian Hossick retained his place at right back, Gary Sayer itching to get back into the side after missing three weeks through injury. Michael Adcock keeping skipper Andy Keir on the bench after his Adcock?s good performance the week before.

As they say a week is a long time in football and Whitstable fell way short of their performance just seven days ago, The longer the game went on the more the visitors dominated the midfield, they did not close VCD down quick enough and were second to balls that last week they were winning.
Town?s best chance of progressing to the cup final fell to Andy Constable, he made the yard of space needed with a great run at the visitors defence, and then with just Wallis to beat he shot wide. Minutes later Foley burst Towns bubble with a superbly timed header from Proberts free kick wide out by the corner flag. He out jumped the defence to thump the ball past Mott. VCD had further chances to extend their lead whilst Town huffed and puffed they created little, Mott came to the rescue on two or three occasions before the final whistle sent the visitors dancing with delight.
There will be other chances for Seager?s young side to lift some silverware; but on this occasion they failed to meet their manager?s high expectations of them. ?They are a very young side and I thought that after the disappointment of the defeats against Deal; then Herne Bay a few weeks ago we were back on track. I still believe we can achieve things this season and until it is matamatcacally impossible I have my eyes set on the league title. ? Said Seager:

Team: Sam Mott, Ian Hossick, Tom Parker, Rob Thomas, Michael Adcock, Alex Hossick, (Sam Prett) Gary Ward (Marc Seager), Marcus Perona, Andy Constable Steve Marshall, Aaron Knight.

Subs not used: Andy Keir Gary Sayer, Mark Lane.
