League cup quarter finals. PDF Print E-mail
ImageTwo KOF League Cup quarter finals for Whitstable sides this Saturday. The first team travel to Herne Bay in the Premier Division Cup for yet another derby match, their fourth meeting this season. While the reserves play at the Belmont in the Division 1&2 Cup against Hythe Town. The previous encounters with the Blues have produced two draws in the league and a win for Town in the Kent Senior Trophy. Bay dispatched Sporting Bengal United convincingly last weekend by eight goals to nil and with no fewer than seven different names on the scoresheet! Whitstable had an altogether harder task at Deal and did well to come away with a point. Once again this football club's strength in depth was ably demonstrated as an impressive team was fielded besides having nearly enough players injured and suspended to form another team.

The other PDC quarter finals being played at the weekend are Thamesmead versus Hythe and Maidstone against Beckenham. Last week all four of these sides won in the league with a total of sixteen goals between them, although Hythe Town were the only team to score one for the opposition as well! Thamesmead are back on song and will probably snuff out Hythes rekindling, the Cable brothers have given a great account of themselves since stepping up from the County League and will continue to power their teams resurgence.

Top draw of the day will be the Stones match, and everyone will be looking for a pointer as to who will roll out league champions. Maidstone nicked victory in the league encounter at Beckenham and will be hoping to win in more convincing style this time around. My opinion is that it could swing either way on the day, whoever the winners are they will surely be favourites to lift the Cup. The other clubs, I suspect, will be favouring Maidstone with an eye to a lucrative semi-final match, a likely gate in excess of 500?

VCD were meant to play at Lordswood in the other PDC match but have had to postpone due to another trifling matter. They travel to Cammel Laird in the 5th round of the FA Vase, a tough draw and a tough trip for any would be supporters. Laird are currently fourth in North West Counties Division 1 (Non league step 5) and are situated in Birkenhead. Best of luck to Fordy and his Kentish Men, hoping they make it through to the last eight flying the flag for Kentish Football.

There are also three KOF Premier League fixtures on Saturday, all of which are important to Whitstable's prospects. Erith & Belvedere will be expected to pick up three points against Greenwich Borough following their win at the same ground last weekend against VCD. This would move the Deres to third place although they will have played more games than anyone else in the top eight. Deal Town are favourites to be the next team to demolish Sevenoaks, the Oaks went down five nil last week at Bourne Park. This would move Deal up to seventh position with between three and five games in hand over every team above them. Finally Tunbridge Wells will have the dubious honour of travelling up to the Mile End Stadium to relieve Sporting Bengal United of three league points. This would move Wells back into the top half of the table and back in the chase. Coincidently, Boro', Oaks and Sporting all joined Erith last week in the list of teams for whom it is mathematically impossible to win the league. I don't see the situation improving for them this week either.

A couple of weeks ago I promoted the U16s semifinal in the KCFA Youth Cup in the Beckenham match programme. This game, at home against Tonbridge Angels, has now been rearranged to Sunday 26th February.

Come on you Reds!
