Deal muscle out jittery Oystermen: PDF Print E-mail

ImageDeal muscle out jittery Oystermen Deal Town 2 v Whitstable Town 2

Picture: Arron Knight scorer of Whitstable's opening goal: The body language at the final whistle said more than any match report of 90 minutes of enthralling football could possibly say. Deal reacted as if they had won not only the league but also the F.A. Cup and Vase in one swoop, racing as one towards their dugout to embrace each other in a victory dance. The visitors, Whitstable; stood numb in shock and heads bowed as if they had finished bottom of the lowest division of the local Sunday League, succumbing to a late Deal charge that bullied them out of three vital title chasing points.

For Deal; the draw and single point was like two points gained on their return to league action after their great F.A. Cup and Vase adventures. For Whitstable; who later learned that all the teams around them had won their games, learnt that their overnight third place in the league, became 5th at a stroke, such was the value of two points dropped as they somehow contrived to throw away a two goal lead.

In the 65th minute at 2-0 ahead it had all looked so different for Whitstable, they had led at the interval by Arron Knights neatly taken goal in the 25th minute. A quick throw in by Gary Sayer then good work by Andy Martin gave Knight the space to slot his left footed shot past the diving Robert Mundey. Town should have been ahead as early as the 12th minute, Sayer and Knight combined, Sam Prett going close with a low shot. For the home side with former Whitstable player John Utterson patrolling almost as lone striker there was little cheer in the first 45 minutes. Deal opted to play Mark Pollard in midfield, a ploy the clearly did not work for them as the visitors midfield of Marcos Perona and Mark Ward enjoyed plenty of the ball.
Some baffling decision by the officials left supporters wondering at times if their was any communication between the three men in black, the man in the middle looked at his linesman, the linesmen looked to the man in the middle and collectively they did their best to spoil the game. Not only were the players baffled and annoyed by their interpretations of the laws of the game, supporters will not continue to watch Kent League football if the officials are not even handed in their decisions.

Half Time: Deal Town 0 v Whitstable Town 1

With Pollard now playing up front alongside Utterson from the re-start Deal came out with even more physical intent than in the first. Whilst they pushed up Whitstable still tried to play football, when they did try to mix it they seemed to come of worst in almost every encounter. I can honestly say I have not witnessed a match this season where Whitstable conceded so many fouls. At every free kick the home side grew in confidence whist the visitors started to get what can only be described as a case of the jitters.

But in the 65th minute Sam Prett seemed to have settled their nerves his well-taken goal after good work by Ward then Martin set his through one-on-one with the keeper. Minutes before Prett had been denied in a carbon copy move, on that occasion Deal keeper saving well with his legs.

Deal?s Ollie Finch should have received a straight red card after he literally kicked Perona up in the air, the referee deemed it just a yellow whilst Perona after lying prostrate for and alarming few minute was never quite in the game after the senseless challenge. Ten minute later the game turned on it?s head, Deal had been winning innumerable free kicks and Pollard  every high ball, so it came as no surprise when one of his cleaver knock downs was poked in by Aron Robinson. Deal now had the belief they could get something out of the game and flooded forward into Whitstable?s half, Rob Thomas made a very telling tackle on Utterson just as he was about to test young Sam Mott in Whitstable?s goal.

With the momentum with the home side and a whistle happy ref, the omens did not look good for Whitstable who conceded yet another free kick gave in the 89th minute. The ball was flighted into what can only be described as a m?l?e of players by Deal?s Michael Cassel, Whitstable?s young keeper Mott was then fouled not once but twice before Josh Davidson fired in from close range. ?How could I jump to gather the ball I was knocked to the floor? Mott said after the game, ?then they held my arms down so there was no way I could do anything about it.?

The ref never even looked at his linesmen, and the linesman never looked at the ref, which just about summed up Whitstable?s afternoon
