ImageConstable hat trick sinks battling ?Bor?o?...Greenwich Borough 3 v Whitstable Town 5: Picture 3 goal Andy Constable:

A second half hat trick by Andy Constable, after a goal in the first half from Steve Marshall and one from Sam Prett in the second, who like Constable came off the bench secured all three points for the visitors. The home side will feel hard done by after leading 2-1 at the interval, in the second half they had chances to possibly win the game, hitting the crossbar and having a goal cleared off the line by Tom Parker. In the end the extra man, Greenwich?s defender Oliver Hunt was sent off with the second half less than ten minutes old for an ugly challenge on Steve Marshall, then getting tangled up in some pushing and shoving afterwards, leaving the ref no option but to show him a straight red, tipped the balance in Whitstable?s favour. Whilst Whitstable had their fair share of the first half the home side?s ploy of missing out the midfield and hitting long balls for the nippy Darren Moncrife on one flank and Joe DiGrino on the other to run onto caused Towns defence some concern.

For the first quarter of the game all seemed to be going to plan for Whitstable, they had contained a side whose current lowly league position belies the skill, and work rate they have within their team. Whitstable certainly having the best of the opening spell, with the exception of a couple of breakaways the home side were camped in their own muddy goal area for long periods as Whitstable had chances to score from the first whistle. Arron Knight going close and Steve Marshall never free of at least two players in close attendance, was all hustle and bustle. Whilst newly signed Whitstable keeper Kevin Fewell, (Sam Mott recalled by Gravesend and Northfleet) coped well in the opening spell with what little he had to do except when Chris Hobbard raced through on goal, he was saved by his defence, Hobbard denied by Rob Thomas with a well timed tackle.

         Whitstable kept up the pressure with a succession of corners, the home side skipper, keeper ImageMichael Holder keeping Whitstable at bay. Alex Hossick, starting in place of the returning Marcos Perona, forced Holder into a great double save, the ball just scrambled away with Marshall closing in. Whitstable won a free kick some way from the edge of the home sides area, player/manager Marc Seager firing the ball to the far post, Marshall taking one touch to steady himself drilled the ball low and hard, Holder unable to keep the ball out in the 21st minute.
      A minute later the home side were level after Whitstable, their minds not switched on after Marshall?s goal allowed Hussain Budack to run from the halfway line, his rising shot beat Fewell from distance. The game was still fairly even with the home side always a danger on the break. With the ref looking at his watch as the first half neared the end, Greenwich?s Moncrife scampered onto a long ball, Towns keeper and his defender getting caught both going for the ball, Moncrife dummied the keeper before going out wide but still able to slot the ball into Whitstable?s net.

Half Time: Greenwich Borough 2 v Whitstable Town 1

     ImageWith Constable on at the restart in place of Darren Budge, the talented right-sided player was played wide on the left, out of position throughout the first half. Naturally left-footed Stuart Harrison, who had played in a ?free role?, reverted to his best position in place of Budge and Whitstable regained their balance and looked the better side by as mile. Then came Hunt?s dismissal, who after fouling Marshall, Hunt petulantly kicked the ball away. His name; along with one of Greenwich?s committee who?s name also ended up in the refs book for remarks directed at his linesman after the red card was shown to Hunt. As is ever the case Ten-Men are not always easy to play against, the numerical advantage means that often players are committed into areas they would not normally stray into, resulting in gaps where defenders would normally be. Arron Knight started to get into some great positions, with good deliveries from the right, Harrison on the other flank also probing as the home side were pushed back.

      Constable levelled the score in the 55th minute with a goal out of nothing, Constable dispossessing Peter Smith then racing into the home sides area, before coolly slotted past Holder at 2-2. After Constable scored, Marcos Perona replaced Hossick; Sam Prett replaced Marshall as Whitstable maintained the pressure. Prett was only on the Pitch for a few minutes before he added his name to the teamsheet, his delightful header from a quickly taken Seager free kick catching the home side flat, put Whitstable 3-2 ahead. They went further ahead, Constable scored his second, Perona?s neatly weighted ball split the visitors defence, Constable taking the ball in his stride and shooting past Holder at 4-2. The home side still showed spirit, they had a good shout for a goal when they claimed the ball was bundled over the line, to be fair the quality of the floodlights was so poor the ref had no chances of giving it from where the was positioned.

        Equally Whitstable had a two good shouts disallowed, Constable scored when the ref deemed him to be offside and Perona fired in a terrific shot which bounced off the crossbar but the ref waved away protests that the ball had crossed the line. The home side were back into the game after a mix up between keeper Fewell and one of his defenders ( it was impossible to see who, as the goalmouth was so dark) Greenwich?s Chris Hubbard bundled the ball over the line in the 79th minute. Then from nothing Wayne Garfield hit a cracking shot from distance clipped Fewell?s crossbar, which could have levelled the scoreline.

But it was not to be, four minutes later Constable scored his third, Whitstable fifth to settle the game, his goal owed much to the good work by Knight whose cross was inch perfect into the feet of Constable, the young striker whirling away in delight after netting his third goal of the game.{mosmedia}
