match Seven reasons to be cheerful? Whitstable Town FC 4 Thamesmead Town 3 KOKL Premier League?Saturday 3rd December 2005 Picture WTFC keeper Sam Mott: If you love goals the Belmont is the place to be as
Town manager Marc Seager saying after the game: ?As disappointed as I was at losing the two nil lead, we showed great character coming back from 3-2 to win the game. I have been trying to build a winning mentality at Whitstable; I think we have gone some way towards that today against a very strong Thamesmead side that never knows when to give up. We did not play that well today, personally I felt I had a poor game and one or two of the lads slipped below the high standards we have set since I took over, but again that shows the mark of a good side when they are not playing to their potential, yet still get the result.? ?We need to take more of the chances we create,? said Whitstable coach Simon Halsey, ? when Whitstable beat Erith 2-0 at the Belmont last month in the KOKL cup as Whitstable, starting much the brighter and were camped in the Thamesmead half for the first fifteen minutes. By which time they were one nil up after Steve Marshall?s delightful looping ball over visiting keeper Alan Hughes in the 7th minute. After 15 minutes Whitstable could easily have been three nil up, Sam Prett went close after good work from Marshall, then Prett set up Arron Knight, his shot inches wide. The pressure Town heaped on opposition keeper Hughes started to tell, with some rash back passes from his defence, and Prett and Marshall harrying at every chance as Knight set up Alex Hossick who also went close. After Marshall scored, it was still all Town but slowly the visitors came back at Whitstable, Sam Thomas denied by Whitstable?s defender Garry Sayer, clearing off his line with young keeper Sam Mott stranded. At the other end Knight demanded a good save from Hughes after Prett set the young winger free, Knight doing everything right but Hughes matched him with a great save. Half Time: Whitstable Town 1 Thamesmead Town 0 Picture captain Andy Keir who played his 150th game for WTFC: If you blinked you missed two goals in two minutes. Whitstable went further ahead after Thamesmead attacked from the re-start young Mott coming to Whitstable?s rescue tipping a cracking drive by Thomas onto his crossbar. The ball rebounded for Prett to lay in the perfect ball into the feet of Marshall who taking the ball in his stride with defenders closing in beat Hughes low down. Thamesmead kicked off and immediately won a corner, which Whitstable were unable to defend Peter Deadman?s great delivery, the goal claimed by Adam Hazelwood. Player/manager Marc Seager saying: ? I will hold my hand up, it came off my head I was marking the lad but as I jumped I turned and the ball flashed off my head, if the lad claimed it fair enough but I know it was an own goal? Picture: Arron Knight (red) shadowed by Thamesmeads Peter DeadmanAt 2-1 down and the second half barely ten minutes gone, the visitors found their stride showing why they have lost just the once in the league before today?s game. With the front pairing of Dean Burns and the nippy Lewis Wood both causing Whitstable?s defence problems with their pace. But up until Lee Loveridge out jumped Town?s defence from yet another Deadman corner to level the score at 2-2, Whitstable led by skipper Andy Keir celebrating his 150th game in Whitstable?s colours, held firm. Whitstable then uped their game, Rob Thomas went close after a surging run from defence, Alex Hossick, in for the injured Marcos Perona also went close, bringing a good save from Hughes after he overlapped on the left with Stuart Harrison. At 2-2 it was still anyone?s game as Whitstable pressed for the winner, against the run of play they went further behind, an attempted clearance re-bounded to the feet of Thamesmead?s Sam Thomas, he beat the stranded Mott as the visitors went 3-2 up. Thamesmead barley had time to celebrate when Knight levelled the score at 3-3 with fierce shot that Hughes was unable to reach it was a great finish; he was set on his way by Prett who; despite not getting on the score sheet, was involved in all that was good about Whitstable.
