Valley Express Kent Youth League U13 South Sunday 30th November Home v Ashford Borough FC This Game To Be Played At The KRBS Belmont Ground Kick Off 11:00am Valley Express Kent Youth League U13 South Sunday 23rd November Home v Ramsgate FC Valley Express Kent Youth League U13 South Sunday 16th November Ebbsfleet FC 4 Whitstable Town FC 0 On a grey and wet Sunday afternoon, Whitstable slipped to defeat against top of the table Ebbsfleet going down 4-0.
Whitstable started well and competed for every ball. However Ebbsfleet held the upper hand in attacking terms which meant that the Whitstable midfield and defence were kept on their toes for long periods of the half and relied on counter attacks to trouble the home defence. After twenty minutes the home team opened the scoring when an Ebbsfleet forward found the back of the net after latching onto a through ball. Minutes later Ben Berry cleared off the goal line and Brennan Cross (twice) prevented Ebbsfleet from scoring further with excellent last ditch tackles.
Whitstable had to dig deep and the midfield quartet of Smith, Neighbour, Lowther and Sam Berry had to work hard to stem further Ebbsfleet attacks. Whitstable’s Jack Sellen’s had a twenty five yard shot saved by the home keeper in one of the few chances created by the away team.
The second half started and the home team extended their lead five minutes after the restart when a free kick into the area was not cleared and the resulting loose ball was dispatched into the net.
Ebbsfleet then began to dominate the game and scored again from a shot from the edge of the area on sixty minutes and then again on sixty five minutes. They were also thwarted by good saves by keeper Atkinson and good defending by the central defence partnership of Appleton and Cross.
In a rare Whitstable attack, Callum Leary’s run down the right wing resulted in the ball being crossed into the six yard box but somehow the ball escaped everyone’s attention and was cleared.
In the remaining minutes Ebbsfleet were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area. When the ball was struck it was destined for the back of the net, however keeper Atkinson pulled off a brilliant save diving to his right to prevent what seemed a certain goal.
Valley Express Kent Youth League U13 South Sunday 2nd November Dartford FC 11 Whitstable Town FC 0 Whitstable were convincingly beaten on Sunday in this one sided match. Playing on Dartford’s 3G pitch they never looked like troubling Dartford and it was no surprise when Dartford took the lead after eight minutes with a well struck shot from the edge of the area. Dartford’s total control of the game meant they scored a further four more goals to go in 5-0 up at the break.
There was no respite for the visitor’s in the second half, with a combination of Dartford’s slick passing and movement and Whitstable’s inability to defend as a team, as Dartford run in another six goals to make the final score 11-0.
There were one or two individual battling performances, but on the whole the general team performance was poor as Dartford gave Whitstable a lesson on how football should be played. Valley Express Kent Youth League U13 South Sunday 26th October 2008 Whitstable Town FC 3 Canterbury City FC 6 Whitstable slipped to a home defeat, despite putting in a much improved team performance against Canterbury City.
Whitstable got off to a flying start and scored after five minutes. Callum Lowther received the ball in midfield and his precise through ball found Callum Leary running through the Canterbury defence. Despite being chased by two Canterbury defenders he kept his cool to chip the ball over the keeper after his initial shot was saved
Canterbury responded and equalised after ten minutes when after a good spell of passing, the ball was played into the box, where a Canterbury striker placed the ball in the net.
Whitstable continued to press hard, with the hard working Harrison Smith covering every blade of grass, they never really allowed Canterbury to settle into their stride. Whitstable again deservedly took the lead again when Lowther again found Leary with a through ball. Faced with two defenders in front of him on the edge of the box, he placed the ball into the far corner of the net to give Whitstable a deserved 2-1 lead at half time.
The second half was barely one minute old when Canterbury equalised in fortunate circumstances’ after Whitstable’s stand-in keeper Maurice Elysee saved the initial shot from the Canterbury striker the ball cannoned off a Whitstable’s defenders leg and rolled into net.
Canterbury continued to press hard but found Berry, Cross and Appleton in the Whitstable defence in determined mood, coupled with an assured performance of Elysee in the Town goal. However Canterbury where not to be denied when a corner was played into the box, Elysee pulled off a good save, however the ball fell nicely to a Canterbury player who volleyed into the net.
Canterbury added a further goal to lead 4- 2, however Whitstable responded well and when a short corner by Neighbour found Smith just inside the box, his shot was parried into the path of Brennan Cross who made no mistake from six yards.
Canterbury scored twice in the last 15 minutes, giving the away team a rather flattering score line in what was for most parts an evenly balance game. Geerings Challenge Cup Sunday 19th October 2008 Whitstable Town 0 Thamesmead Town 9 Whitstable were knocked out of the Geering cup on Sunday after being well beaten by a good Thamesmead side. The opening minutes were fairly even, however Thamesmead took the lead after five minutes when a ball was played into the near post, where a Thamesmead striker produced a neat finish giving the town keeper no chance.
Whitstable rallied shortly afterwards with a Hudson free kick just going over the bar and a Jack Sellen’s shot which flashed across the goal. Thamesmead then stepped up their game and with their strikers who were a hand full for the town defence all game with their strong runs and good skills, and their tactic of playing long balls up to the front two proved ideal against a town defence pushing up for offside. This tactic worked well and they scored a further four goals before half time to dominate the first half. It could have been much worse but the efforts of keeper Atkinson who saved well twice when faced with one on one situation’s.
In the second half Whitstable again rallied briefly with shots from Hancock and Neighbour forcing the Thamesmead keeper to make saves. With the hard working trio of Neighbour, Smith and Elysee, Whitstable tried to knock the visitors out of their stride but to no avail. With Thamesmead scoring at regular intervals during the second half, the referee blew the final whistle after Thamesmead converted a penalty to make the final score 9-0. Tesco U13 County Cup Sunday 12th October 2008 Maidstone United FC 4 Whitstable Town FC 1 Whitstable were knocked out of the Tesco cup on Sunday going down 4-1. They got off the a dream start when Maidstone lost possession straight from kick off, and when Sellen’s through ball found Leary on the edge of the box, his shot found the back of the net. This shook Maidstone into action and they pressed continuously for an equaliser but with keeper Atkinson in good form and some resolute defending by Cross, Terry, Coles and Hudson in the Town defence they kept the Maidstone strikers at bay. However just when it seemed that they would go in 1-0 up at half time, Maidstone equalised when a Maidstone striker reacted quicker to a rebound after the town keeper produced a good save. Maidstone started the second half and forced Whitstable back into their own half for long periods and it came a no surprise when they scored their second from 12 yards after a poor defensive clearance. Whitstable tried to grab an equaliser but this left gaps in their defence which enabled Maidstone to grab a couple more goals before the final whistle.
Tesco U13 County Cup POSTPONED Sunday 5th October 2008 Away v Maidstone United Valley Express Kent Youth League U13 South Sunday 28th September 2008 Whitstable Town FC 0 Dover Athletic FC 4 Valley Express Kent Youth League U13 South Sunday 21st September 2008 Whitstable Town FC 1 Hudson Ashford Town FC 1 Whitstable remain unbeaten this season after a 1-1 draw away to Ashford Town. Whitstable started well and dominated the opening fifteen minutes with both Elysee and Sellens shooting just past the post and a Leary shot being well saved by the Ashford keeper. However as the half progressed Ashford began to take hold of the game and went close twice with shots just going wide of the goal, and were further prevented from scoring when Clements made a goal line clearance. Ashford eventually opened the scoring after 30 minutes when a defensive mistake from a throw in let the Ashford winger free down the wing and his cross into the penalty box found an Ashford striker who slotted the ball into the net giving the keeper Atkinson no chance. Whitstable responded just before half time with a 25 yard shot from Coles just clearing the Ashford crossbar.
The second half started with Ashford again looking to increase their lead, but found the hard working trio of Smith, Coles and Clements in determined mood. As the half progressed the game opened up with Lowther’s shot being saved by the Ashford keeper and the loose ball being cleared for a corner. With ten minutes left Ashford were prevented from increasing their lead when Atkinson in the Whitstable goal produced two good saves in close succession.
With just three minutes remaining and the game slipping out of Whitstable’s grasp the ball fell to the feet of Sam Hudson making his first appearance since breaking his leg last season. From twenty five yards out his dipping shot deceived the Ashford keeper and found the back of the net. Shortly afterwards the referee blew the final whistle.
This was a hard earned point for the team in what was an under par performance on the day. Team Atkinson, Cross, Coles, Clements, Appleton, Neighbour, Smith, Sellens, Leary, Hancock, Elysee, Kehoe, B.Berry, Lowther, Hudson
Valley Express Kent Youth League U13 South Sunday 14th September 2008 Whitstable Town FC 3 Larkfield FC 2 Ref - Daniel Myhill Whitstable maintained their 100% record in the Kent League with a 3-2 victory against Larkfield in a scrappy encounter on Sunday. Whitstable started the game well pushing their opponents deep into their half for long periods. However with the midfield getting congested and attacks being broken up, the home team played a ball wide to Sam Berry on the right wing and the winger cut inside the fullback and delivered a near post cross which resulted in the Larkfield keeper pushing the ball into his own net. In the remaining 15 minutes of the first half the home team had further chances to increase their lead with Elysee, Leary and Neighbour all going close for the home team. The second half was more evenly matched with both teams pushing on and Larkfield were awarded a fortunate penalty when a point blank shot struck a Whitstable defenders arm. The penalty was duly dispatched giving keeper Atkinson no chance. However the home team took the lead shortly afterwards when a through ball from Clements found Craig Coles, whose galloping run took him into the penalty box from where he struck the ball into the roof of the net for a superb goal. Larkfield pushed forward looking for a equaliser and were rewarded when Whitstable failed to clear the ball out of their penalty box which resulted in a Larkfield striker finding the net from close range.
At that stage both sides would have settled for a point apiece, however with five minutes remaining Whitstable settled the match when a through ball found Callum Leary who beat the offside trap and squared the ball to Callum Lowther who rolled the ball into the empty net for the winner.
This was another hard working display from the team who had to roll up their sleeves to grind out the right result. Atkinson, Cross, Coles, Clements, Appleton, Neighbour, Smith, Sam Berry, Leary, Hancock, Elysee, Lowther, Sellens, Ben Berry, Simmonds, Kehoe Valley Express Kent Youth League U13 South Sunday 7th September 2008 Whitstable Town 2 (Hancock , Leary ) Margate FC 1 Ref - P Rowley Whitstable opened their Kent league campaign with an excellent win over Margate on Sunday. In the opening exchanges both side battled hard for dominance in the middle of the park, with Harrison Smith and Chris Neighbour working hard to push Whitstable forward at every opportunity.
Whitstable took the lead after fifteen minutes when from a Chris Neighbour’s corner, Joe Hancock’s superb header from twelve yards flew into the top right hand corner of the net giving the Margate keeper no chance. However Margate drew level ten minutes later when they scored from a direct free kick from 25 yards despite Kieran Atkinson’s best efforts in the Whitstable goal. The score line of 1-1 at half time was a fair reflection of how the game was being played.
The second half followed the same pattern of play as the first, however it was Whitstable again who gained the upper hand when Jack Clements found Harrison Smith whose through ball put Callum Leary clear of the Margate defence and his precise finish gave the keeper no chance. Margate had no option but to push forward but found Clements, Coles, Appleton and Cross in the Whitstable defence in determined mood, which limited Margate to two chances, one of which was produced a good save from keeper Atkinson.
This was a great start to the season for Whitstable, who deserved the victory through their level of commitment and desire shown in the game.
Team – Atkinson, Cross, Coles, Clements, Appleton, Neighbour, Smith, Berry, Sellens, Leary, Hancock, Kehoe, Elysee
