Oh! I do like to play beside the seaside !
How unlucky do you have to be to get drawn away in cup competition three times in a row? Whitstable Town have to travel again this Saturday, this time to Shoreham-by-Sea in the FA Vase competition. Currently mid table in Sussex Division 1 Shoreham, known as the Musselmen, have a won 2 Lost 2 record and were just knocked out the FA Cup by Southern Leaguers Lymington & New Milton 4-2, after having lead for three quarters of the game. Mind, they have a Tuesday night Sussex Senior Cup fixture against Div 2 Pagham which should restore their confidence before our encounter. A competitive match ought to be the result, the Oystermen taking an unbeaten in five league and cup record into the game. The gasworks choir expects every man to do his duty. |

Jake Gess Gess strike sees Town through. Saturday September 2nd F. A. Cup (Sponsored by E.ON) Preliminary Round: Bedfont 0 v. Whitstable Town 1 Whitstable Town are the only Kent Football League side through to the First Qualifying Round of the F. A. Cup after their one nil victory away to Bedfont of the Combined Counties League. Jake Gess settled the Preliminary Round match with twenty minutes to go and a home fixture against Croydon Athletic on September 16th They could be joined by Slade Green as they drew two apiece with Cobham at The Glen, the replay is on Tuesday evening It was little wonder that the spectator?s attention drifted from the pitch to sight of International Airliners wiggling their wings in the high wind as they came into land on nearby Heathrow Airport just skimming the rooftops of the Clubhouse. So close is the clubhouse to the end of the runway, when not playing football the club hires out the pitch as a viewpoint for Plane Spotters who flock to Heathrow every weekend. No weather forecast could have predicted the condition of the pitch with over long grass and the cuttings left lying on top. Wind was however forecast which at times was swirling from one direction to another, changing in the blinking of an eye. |

This week's football is a knock-out!
Peter Albin looks ahead to the weekends games: Another exciting weekend of cup football ahead this week. Whitstable Town travel away to Bedfont of the Combined Counties Premier for their FA Cup preliminary round match on Saturday. We do have some history as they put us out of the cup in 1998. The two sides have shown similar form in their respective leagues, finishing in the top six for the last four seasons. Yet, so far this year Town have had the happier start and might look the favourites on paper. Being drawn away will negate some of that advantage of recent form and a good contest is forecast. From what I remember of the previous match report, the Oystermen will have to concentrate heavily on the ball as the aircraft stream by overhead. The reward for a win is a home draw against either Arundel or Croydon Athletic. |
