The Second Round of the Kent Senior Trophy dominates the weekend action for many Kent Football League clubs and several teams from the Kent County League. The highlight of the round is the match between third placed, Whitstable Town, and the fourth placed side, Greenwich Borough at the Belmont. They have met twice so far this season in the Kent Football League Premier Division Cup and, on both occasions, the honours have been even with two draws. |

Whitstable Town play Greenwich Borough on Saturday at the Belmont Road ground in a Lea-Ray Kent Senior Trophy second round match. The two sides have yet to meet in the league but the two group games in the Kent League Premier Division Cup resulted in two score draws, 1-1 at Harrow Meadow and a six goal thriller here. Borough had a bye into this round while Town won through 4-5 at Deal Town after extra time in the first round. This contest has excitement written all over it, both sides are in good league form and goals are surely guaranteed. Three other all Kent League fixtures in the KST as Slade Green travel to Thamesmead Town, Sevenoaks play at Lordswood and Hythe Town play at Erith Town. As anyone who reads this column regularly will know my cup predictions are usually rubbish, a fascinating aspect of the game that either side can win away from league pressure. So here goes! |

Marc Seager WTFC
manager: speaking after WTFC verse Lordswood:
“Second week running we have been
down to ten men, but to take four points out
of six when we need to dig deep into our resources and showed great courage to
get something out of the game. One of my philosophies is that I believe the
mark of a good side is that if they can’t get all three points, then they don’t
get beat.
A lot of teams would have panicked going a goal down with only ten
men, can you say what kept them going? We showed today that we have
something different about us this year, sure we are the team that everyone is
trying to turn over, but all good sides have to cope with that, and I believe
we are a good side. I think last weeks sending off was a bit harsh, this week
was just plain silly as Andy was walking a tightrope after his first half
yellow and he let himself down. Look Andy (Constable) is the sort of player who
wears his heart on his sleeve and sometimes he does some silly things he knows
he has made a mistake he said his bit in the dressing room and we move on. If
we had finished the game with eleven men we would have won today, we were right
on top then down to ten men, then a goal down, we showed character coming back
to grab a point but what’s happened has happened and we move on. If the game
had been five minutes longer we would have won, we were right on top and you’d
have thought that we were the side with eleven instead of the other way round.
And although we dropped points today we are still un-beaten and mentally that
gives such belief. WTFC © 2006 (match report to follow) http://www.theimagefile.com/web/perlaleng

Simon Halsey, )left in picture) Simon Halsey WTFC
coach was speaking after the 1-1 draw against Lordswood at the Belmont, Alex
Hossick scoring for Town after striker Andy Constable was sent off for his
second yellow card. “To go down to ten
men, then a goal down, but to still have enough about us to dominate the second
half shows the mental toughness we have about the whole side.” Said Halsey.
Asked if he was disappointed with Andy Constable’s dismissal, Halsey added.
“ Andy has apologised to his team-mates and to Marc and myself, he knows that
he let the team down, not least getting sent off when we were in control of the
game and at a time when you could sense that there was only going to be one
winner, Whitstable. The first half was fairly even, I think both sides
cancelled each other out, but the second was different story. We passed the
ball about and looked to be on a role then Andy had a rush of blood getting
sent off going up for the ball at a corner to palm it into the net after his
first half yellow card was silly, he knows he has let us down, but Andy is a
battler and this will not effect him. After going a goal down we showed such
mental strength to keep the un-beaten run going, just disappointing that we
dropped points, but I was pleased for Marlon (Button) when he and Sam (Prett)
went on they gave us a different option and our goal was a great move from back to front, with a first class finish” WTFC © 2006

Spoil second chance for Town? Lords would! An opportunity on Saturday for Whitstable Town to take advantage of one of their games in hand over VCD Athletic who are playing in an FA Vase tie. Lordswood are the visitors to the Belmont Road ground and they won't believe their luck with the fixtures calendar, having to play the top three sides 'on the bounce' in the league, Vickers beat them on October 21st and Thamesmead last weekend. Lords had just got their first away win prior to the Vickers game beating Erith & Belvedere by one in a seven goal mêlée. Scoring goals has not been their problem averaging nearly two per match with goals from a variety of players. Tricky opposition for Town and every player will need to be alive to the threat from all over the field. The pressure will definitely be on the Oystermen to get a result and the reward of second spot in the table, assured with a win, should provide the motivation. Check your diaries now, with Whitstable in KST cup action next week while Vickers travel to Croydon in the league things should be nicely set up for our league meeting at Oakwood on Saturday the 2nd of December....
