JIM SPEAKS TO TONY ROUSE AFTER THE HERNE BAY WIN

Jim Ward speaking to Tony Rouse after the 4-1 derby win at home to Herne Bay:

TR

Jim, a four one win against the Bay, you must be delighted with the result and they played such good football.

JW

Well as far as things go, and it’s easy for people to say, we’ve dropped points but let me tell you we have put in some really good performances and then given away really, really stupid goals at important times. We are trying to get the lads to be more professional in the way we play, that does not mean that we did not play well in those games- we did. But look at today there was only going to be one winner and it was the way we went about it. I thought “hats off to the lads”- Danny &  I said to them before the game that one of these days someone is going to get a hiding- well that’s what happened today.

TR

The way the lads played it could have been more.

JW

It could have been more.  They had a couple of chances but nothing too much to worry us.  I am having a party tonight round my house and everyone is invited. My wife and family were at the game so tonight will be  a good night.

TR

A couple of things during the match that pleased me. One after they scored inside three minutes we did not panic. Another was late in the game when  we were already 4-1 up. It was the sight of your skipper and centre forward Ian Pulman running fully 40 yards to double up and prevent then getting another corner.

JW

Team ethic, that’s what we been trying to install in the side but it takes time. Having said that we have been playing like that for the last few weeks against Merstham and South Park and others we and we never got anything out of it. We said the lads should keep doing what you are doing. We had a great session on Thursday night where we worked on attack, defence and shooting-look even Scotty Heard got a couple of goals.

TR

Well it paid off because he did today in the match.

JW

Yes and I never thought I turn to Danny and say Scotty’s on a hat-trick. But it’s a team thing and we got the three points and move on; we played well today- the whole team played well, but we have a couple of games coming up and we want to take today into Ramsgate and Redhill.

TR

But you said to me this early on this season is a work in progress, is that still the case ?

JW

Yes, but you have to remember that except for one player today it was the same team for the last three weeks; and no one can deny that.  I thought the goals were superb.

TR

On that point one or two of the supporters asked why not use the substitutes on the bench. My argument was why the need to make a change, none of the lads wanted to come off

JW

Well we did talk about it and no disrespects to the lads on the bench, we are lucky we have such a good squad, so no changes apart for when Tom Loynes came off as he was on empty. Sometimes it’s very hard for the lads on the bench but it was so important today that we get the tree points and keep the momentum.

TR

Thanks Jim and I will finish by wishing you and Danny, the players Happy New Year.

JW

And from all of us on the playing side to all at the club and to ALL the supporters, who once again were terrific today as they have been all year, they do make a difference and they know they do so to you all Happy New Year.
