Hythe Town 2 Whitstable Town 2
FA Carlsberg Trophy 2nd Qualifying Round
Saturday 2nd November 2013
Craig Thompson scored twice against his former club to earn Whitstable Town against Hythe Town a replay to be played on Wednesday night.
The early exchanges cancelled both sides out. Whitstable did have the first opportunity when Thompson had the first shot after a minute but his attempt was easily gathered by Dan Eason in the Hythe goal. After a quarter of an hour Steve Hafner sent in an excellent ball but Ollie Brown could not quite get on the end of
the cross. Four minutes later Hythe had their first opportunity when firstly Shaun Welford had a shot blocked by Luke Watkins. The ball rebounded to Josh Burchall but his attempt was also blocked. The latter part of the half was played in monsoon conditions and as the rain fell both Burchall and Jamie Collado for the hosts had shot beaten out in quick succession after 40 minutes. A minute before half time the lively Charlie Smith broke down the right hand side off the penalty box but shot wide of the target. The half time interval marked a real change in the weather. The rain stopped, the skies cleared and the wind died down.
Hythe started the second half on the attack and after 49 minutes Collado looped a shot over the bar. Three minutes later Watkins saved well from Welford. Within a minute both Dave Cook and Collado could not get a clear shot in as the ball crossed the penalty area.. However after 56 minutes Hythe took the lead. Substitute, Ronnie Dolan sent in a cross from the right and the ball was fired in by Welford. A minute later Welford sent in a shot that went over the bar. This short period seemed to ignite Whitstable and they were level on the hour when
Thompson chipped the ball over the advancing Eason. The game came alive with chances now being created at both ends. Firstly after 61 minutes Taser Hassan received the ball but looped the ball over the bar. Ashley Baverstock then had an opportunity at the other end but could not find the target. On 65 minutes the visitors had a strong call for a penalty when Charlie Smith appeared to be pushed in the back. The referee waived away the appeals. Hythe then took the lead for the second time after 68 minutes. A Welford shot was well saved by Watkins but the rebound fell to Dolan who fired home. Whitstable got the equaliser they deserved on 77 minutes when Jack Simon sent in a corner to the near post where Thompson was on hand to fire home. The game could then have gone either way as both sides opened up the game. On 79 minutes Smith couldn’t get his shot away and then Simon hooked in a cross come shot that looped over Eason who was just able to claw the ball away before it dropped into the top corner. Lee Winfield did have a shot blocked at the other end with three minutes to go.
The final whistle signalled the end of an entertaining two-all draw and a mouth watering replay on Wednesday at the Belmont.
