Whitstable Town 0 Tooting & Mitcham United 1
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 7th March 2015
A fifth minute goal was enough for Tooting & Mitcham United to take all three points at Whitstable on Saturday afternoon.
Tooting in fact converted the first chance they had as a free kick from the right found Dan Summers who rose above the Whitstable defence to head home the only goal of the game. There were only a few more chances in the first half as on 21 minutes Tooting’s Sol Pinnock shot off balance but the ball went high and wide.
Whitstable, who were a shadow of recent performances, had their first chance on 28 minutes when Scott Heard hit a long range shot which went straight at visiting keeper Alex Kozakis. Tooting continued to have the bulk of the limited chances as on 37 minutes Pinnock had another shot that was tipped over the bar by Town keeper Luke Watkins. A controversial offside decision denied Ian Pulman as the home striker broke through and lobbed the ball into the net but the goal was ruled out.
Town looked brighter in the second half and had the first three opportunities of the half as firstly on 50 minutes Jake Mackenzie broke thorough but fired wide and then after 55 minutes Pulman had a free kick that went high over the bar. On the hour, Whitstable came close to equalising when Luke Girt sent over a shot that thumped against the cross bar and away. However Tooting were looking dangerous on the break and it was Harry Knock who had a header on the far post that went wide. On 71 minutes Kazakis had to be at
his best to tip over a shot from Heard and then on 78 minutes Whitstable winger Tom Loynes sent in a looping shot that went just over the cross bar. On 86 minutes Ollie Gray had a shot deflected wide of the Tooting goal and then from the resultant corner Gray headed just wide. Then as the game entered injury time Tooting midfielder Billy Marshall was shown a second yellow and then a red card. One more chance went a begging for Whitstable deep into injury time when Tooting cleared away following a melee in their penalty area that involved home keeper Watkins.
It was a “bad day at the office” for Whitstable who must now regroup before next week’s tie at bottom placed Horsham
